Unemployment.

The issue of unemployment is a severe issue all over the world. In defining unemployment we say the ones who are currently unemployed though they like to be employed/ though they deserve to be employed.  Or the ones who like to join the work force though they want to. The causes of unemployment are vast. In the first if there is a mismatch between the demand of job seekers and the availability of job opportunities. These days let it be private sector or the government every one wishes an employee with high developmental level of skills; soft skills, interpersonal skills, and other job related skills. So if there are so many degree holders passing out in great numbers they may lack skills developments and personality traits. The main reason for this is the education system in Sri Lanka is highly exam-oriented not job oriented or skill oriented where as in foreign countries education system is as the above mentioned two so that even though they can't find jobs they engage themselves in self employment or initiating business deals. Secondly technological change in industries. Often technology plays a major role in jobs these days. So though a person is highly educated if he/ she lacks the skill in handling technology he/ she is unable to find jobs. That's why Information Communication and Technology is introduced in the school curriculum as a compulsory subject for secondary level students. So when they learn it from school level it becomes naturalized in their cognitive development and no longer they have to learn it anew when about to find jobs or in tertiary levels. Thirdly if one person is moving from one job to another job and if one person gets professional vacations such as leave for higher studies or maternity leave there'll be a temporary unemployment. Fourthly when there is a change in the government  and the prevailing government introduces some new economic policies there'll be changes in industrial sector and the job market. When discussing of the effects of unemployment first and foremost it affects the individual income, thereby it affects the income level of the family and it decides or brings a change in the power of consuming. When most of the citizens of the country are employed it increases the percentage of GDP and GNP and it brings a high level of foreign currency inflow into the country if the citizens are employed overseas. So ultimately it decides the development of the country in the long run.

So the more this problem handled effectively the more it's good to the well being of the country. So let's eradicate this problem by being initiative.

The story of Haththiram Bhavaji.

This story explains the fruits of piety. Let's move to the story.
Once Haththiram Bhavaji, a hermit who retired from normal life for  a long period came to Thiruppathi from the northern [part of India. The quietude of the place atttracted him so much and he decided to stay there itself. He built a hermitage there and began dwelling in it.He had his shower in the holy river Pushkarini and worshipped Vengadesapperumaal, who dwelled in the peak of Thiruppathi hills and soon Haththiram Bhavaji became a devotee of that lord.He engrossed his thoughts with his swami and mumbled "see there my loving god, there appear my loving god's holy feet and so on ans so forth. But the village people couldn't understand his piety and considered him to be va mad one.Sometimes he sat in front of dice games and imagined that his swami was in front of him. Sometimes he told "swami it's your turn" and imagined that swami was playing with him. But alas the next moment he realized that swami was not with him and it's only a visionary and his face became dull and gloomy with sadness.

Days were passing like this. One day there heard a booming sound in his hermitage. The very next moment a nice fragrance and a shimmering light spread on each and every corner of the hermitage. There stood his swami among the flickering lights. Bhavaji couldn't believe his eyes and indeed his happiness was inexplicable. He shouted in a great glee "govinda, seenivasa, perumale and the possible synonyms of his name. He prostrated himself on swami's feet and got the blessings of swami. Swami was gladdened so much by his devotee's piety and and suggested that they could play dice as he wished and added that he has to go quickly. Bhavahji said "why not swami" and took swami into the hermitage and offered a clean place to sit on. Bhavaji only sat in front of the games but his concentration was not in the game but in swami. When swami noticed this he mischievously asked "why Bhavaji, wont you play the games". Only then Bhavaji returned from his reverie and began to play the game.  Swami appreciated his piety and returned to the temple. Thus swami came to Bhavaji's home everyday, played with Bhavaji and returned to his temple.

One day while they were playing swami said "Bhavaji, I can hear some sounds outside. May be some visitors for you. Why don't you go and invite them into your hermitage.Bhavaji said why not swami and went outside to receive his visitor. But he could't find any one there. While he was pondering who could be the visitor swami removed his garland and as soon as Bhavaji returned swami left immediately saying he has some urgent matters to attend to. After swami went a fair distance only Bhavaji noticed that swami left his wreath there and thought he could there and thought that he could have forgotten that. He waited till late that night thinking swami will return to collect his garland but he didn't. Bhavaji thought that without swami's appearance won't be complete and perfect. So without delaying further he went to the temple in order to return swami's garland. Simultaneously at the temple the people found that the garland was missing in swami's idol and they talked among themselves very fussily who could have stolen it. Just at that moment when Bhaavaji came to that place with the garland all the people screamed " He is the thief, catch him immediately". So every one got hold of him at once, tied him and thrashed him severely. Bhavaji shouted in grievance that swami is his favourite person and how could he steal his belongings. But no one listened to him except the high-priest ,who adviced them to listen to him. When they asked for the explanation he said that swami has visited his hermitage and played dice with him and went away without remembering to collect the garland. The next moment there was a roaring of laughter in the crowd and they scoffed him that swami has nothing to attend to so that he visited his hermitage and played dice with him. Bhavaaji pleaded them to believe him at which the high priest said "well, we're going to imprison you, load the prison with sugar canes. You should finish off all the sugar canes before the dawn. If what you say is true your swami will help you in this critical situation. But if we find that you've cheated us you'll be punished very severely" and they went away. Bhavaji prayed with drenching eyes "swami, I haven't made any mistake. If I'm guilty free you'll help me. I have spartan faith in you". He prayed and prayed till late at night and fell asleep exhausted. Immediately after swami masqueraded himself as a white elephant, entered the prison, ate the whole load of sugar canes an a split second and pulverized the the doors of the prison and went out. On hearing these sounds the high priest and all the others awoke and gathered  there to see what has happened. They talked among themselves that who has entered the doors when the doors are locked and so on and so forth in great astonishment. Finally they said that bhavaji's swami could be the only person who could have come here and eaten all the sugar canes to rescue him. They repented that they've insulted Bhavaji without remorse and decided to apologize Bhavaji for what they've done.  On hearing all these sounds Bhavaji himself awoke from his sleep and asked what was the matter. Immediately they encircled him, explained the whole story and begged their pardon for all the harsh words they've spoken unwantedly. Bhavaji couldn't believe his eyes, his eyes streamed with tears and with drenching eyes said piously,"swami, did you come here for the sake of me, how can I express my gratitude to you, oh! govinda, perumale......... He went on thanking and praising swami. Now no one spoke a word of refusal and every one revered him as a great devotee of swami. Thus Bhavaji stayed in Thiruppathi and worshipped swami very piously and eventually mingled with swami.

Bhavji's story is great example that whoever worship god with extreme piety will eventually mingle with god.

I have a great craving to interpret Scriptures into modern English. Here's scrap of interpretation extracted from Ramayana. The situation is prince Rama is banished from the city of Ayodhya along with Seetha and Lakhmana. They, before crossing a river had to stay in Kuhan's cave whom they met in the wood. The conversation among them.

Kuhan:- Oh! honorable great prince of Ayodhya! I bid a welcome to my premises for this is the wood in my control. Oh! please have holy shower in the river and meanwhile I'll arrange the dinner for all.

Rama:- Oh! comrade Kuhan. I'm so much enthralled by thy welcome and my heart fills with delirium and from this moment itself I've three siblings: Lakshmana, Bharatha ,Chaththrukkan and Kuhan.

Kuhan:- Why waste words.Am I deserve to be one of thy siblings. Instead I revere and worship lord Rama as my great god.

Rama:- Aye! Kuhan. Don't give way to clan system. Here under the sun we're offspring of one mother.(embracing Kuhan)

Kuhan:- (after their bath) Please do feel at home. Oh! prince Rama. Please have the pure honey which I've collected from the wood exclusively for you. Please have a full belly dinner. I'm here to serve all thy wishes.

Rama:-We've had enough of delicious dinner filled with pure love.(winking at Kuhan). I express my gratitude to my loving Kuhan and may the almighty always be with my loving sibling.
(Lakshmana prepares a bed made of grasses to lord Rama and Seetha, the heavenly daughter of mother earth) and every one goes to sleep.

This may not be so very nice but I'll practice myself and improve a little bit.

Pop Songs.

During the period of late 60's (67, 68) our Tamil people following the example of baila songs Sinhalese created pop songs which they sang in the stages with fervour and zest so that it attrcted people very much and they obtained a publicity. The father of Pop songs was Voly Basthian, and the place of origination of baila songs was Portugese. The popular singer of pop songs A.E Manoharan was given the title "King of kings of pop music" who could sing the same lyrics in the same tune in both Sinhala and Tamil. We still reme, mber the song " sinna maamiye un sinna mahal enge pallikkup ponalo padikkkap ponalo"  During this era of pop a person called San created CD's of pop songs it reached cthe people in a vast level. The first ones who performed pop without any rap was Konesh-Paramesh music group of Trincomalee. Some other famous pop songs are a a song of Saiva hotel by Sivanandhan and "Vanna vanna poop pole sirikkudhu paappaa". If we analyze the field of cinema as well many and many creative and competitive lyricists are on the race. Now a days we can listen  a trend of creative lyrics which provokes our thoughts and also very nice to enjoy. Let's have a glimpse of some lyrics of cinema songs with their meaning in English.

"oru kal oru kannadi udauyamal modik kondal kadhal"
Even though there are differences in love loving those differences and being together until the end of life is a real love.

"kaattin mozhi oliya isaiya, poovin mozhi nirama manama
idhayahththin mozhihal purinthu vittal manitharkku mozhiye thevai illai
iyatkayin mozhihal purindhu vittal manidarkku mozhiye thevai illai"
What's the language of wind is it sound or music
If a person can understand the language of heart and nature no any other language is needed.

"Alli vizhi oram anjanaththaith theetti
Andhi vanna koondhal meedhu thaazhai malar sootti
 Aadhi mudhal andham aabaranam pooti
mangai aval vandhal minnal muham kaatti"
The situation of this lyrics is the girl has loved a boy but unfortunately she's engaged with another one. So her lover sings these lines. The husband addresses the wife as oh!anger and the wife addresses her husband as hero. She tells I understand the value of your love in this period of separation. I cried and cried and I felt ashamed of crying in light so I switched off the lights and cried in the darkness.

"Kaadhal anukkal udambil eththanai
Neutron elecron
un Kaandhakkannil moththam ethathanai"
which combines the knowledge opf Science with the artistic view of poetry. The lover asks how many atoms of love in your body, how many neutrons and electrons in your magnetic eyes.

"Neerukkum namakkum oru dheva bandham anbe uruvaanadhu
Anbe uruvaanadhu neerukkul muham paartha jodi ondrai
meendum kazhai serththadhu".
Oh love there's a holy bconnection between us and water. We met in the water and here again the rain unites us.

"Mauname unnidam anndha maunam dhane azhahu
Paarvaihal podume adil vaarthai pesippalahu"
The situation of this song is the girl is a deaf mute girl and addressing that girl as silence is so much beauteous. and the lover consoles her as if you speaks with the looks that's enough. Oh! silence. It's that silence which  is beautiful in you. Just looks are enough to speak with.

"Thangaththodu joliththa manjal kondraippoovil kulaiththa manjal"

The situation is the lover tells his lover that the day I saw you was circling in my soul and the words I spoke to you are reverberating in my soul.

"Kanna varum velai andhi malai naan kaaththirunthen"
Chinna chinna thayakkam sella mayakkam adhai ettirundhen"
The situation is it's a girls betrothel and she's singing and dancing in  happiness saying that I'm waiting for my darling in the dusk and Im overcoming my hesitations.

"Nenjap poop pol koithavale"
"Ennai eadho seithavale"
The situation is that the lover tells his lover that she has beflowered his heart just likeca flower and he's become a  mad one.

"Thadai illai saavilume unnodu vara"
The situation is that the girl tells the boy that ypu've mingled in my heart just like a god, who doesn't have a body or shape. The boy in turn tells oh! my girl, my heart is filled with the thoughts of you, this soul is not mine any more, and there are no barriers to join you even in death.

"Nalla aanin azhahinai rasikkum penmgalin orappaarvaihal ooralahu"
"Vaanoloyodu paadum azhahu"
"Paadikkonde samaippathalahu"
The situation is the beauty of women is admired and the sneaking looks of women who admires the handsomeness of a man stealthily is beautiful, it's beautiful that they sing with the radio, and it's beautiful that they sing while they cook.

"Senjooriya jothiyil chandiran oli sernthatho
 Asainthaadum aazhiyil azhahiya nadhi kalanthao
Isaiyodu serum thaalam sruthiyodu koodum raaham
Adhaippole enthan nenjam unnai sernthathe"

The mingling of hearts is mentioned. It's told that me heart mingled with yours just like the mingling of the rays of moon and the sun, just like the mingling of the waving sea and dancing river. Just like music and beat mingles just like the tunes mingles with tempo my heart mingled with yours.

"Aaruuyire aaruyire anbe un anbilthane naan vaazhhiren
Uyire en uyire unakkul en uyiire
Kanhal moodi azhuhiren karaihiren
Uyiraip pirihiren"

The situation is India under the rule of British; A white girl and an Indian have a  love affair, it's found out by the British and they're made apart. They cry saying Oh! my love, I'm living 'cause of your love. Oh! my soul I close my eyes and I'm crying and crying and my soul melts. I'm crying thinking of you and thinking of us.

Thank goodness I finished. It took a long tome to type this.

Short Films.

Short films are films which run for minimum 15 minutes and maximum 30 minutes. Short films if used properly can convey many and many important messages to the society. Now a days our youngsters are in an ordeal in preparing short films which convey  messages of ethnic conflict. Thvarip pirantha tharalam by Vatheesh Varunan, envelopes the theme of the situation of children in the post war situation. Few years back there was a short film by an Indian artist discussing the same theme( the theme of war) where an Indian girl visits SriLanka during war period. It is highly appreciable that Sinhalese artists have the proper understanding of our problem that they produce films of war situations (with you without you and Ini avan by Asoka Handagama); I'm not that much prophecied to appreciate such great artists but I'm simply happy of those products, rather than some South Indian films which lack the understanding of our problem( kannaththil muththamittal, Rameswaram) Howsoever if many and many literary creations are being prepared it's a good sign that there'll be a solution to our problem( both Tamils' and Sinhalese' problems) where our hands were separated by the mis ruling of the politicians but real victims were innocent people who lived concordant over centuries. So if these creations help to bring a beautiful solution to our problem( my intention is not criticizing anyone) we, the Lankans will be happy 'cause we really love our mother Lanka. One day this Lanka will be not wonder of Asia but wonder of the world. But for that we've to toil. We've to change ourselves. One poem by a Sinhalese artist, Suminda Kithsiri envelopes the event of the ignition of the library of Jaffna.

Alas! Lord Buddha was shot dead,
by the furies of authority.
His holy carcass
Lies face down
In the staircases of
Mine lore of Jaffna.

Mine lore was in a conflagration.
Which spreads the fragrance of Thirukkural,
Meanwhile the very Venna artist
Is dumb founded in the
Heart of the city.

Appa, appa,
Which was our place of victory,
Which was the place where
Uncles of Army,
Uprooted the Tigers.
Which was the place where
We hoisted our flag.
While treading in the fiords.
The innocent son searches the
remnants of Nandhikkadal!!!

Om Sai Ram!!!
